Around 400 students, including 150 girls, were stranded at a state-run residential school in Odisha’s Kendrapara district on Sunday after floodwater entered the campus, an official said.
The government school is situated in a low-lying zone at Kulasahi village under the Penthapala gram panchayat limits in the Pattamundai block of the district.
This fresh inundation affected several low-lying areas across the district as the Brahmani River surged past its danger mark.
The area is grappling with flooding for the second time in roughly a fortnight.
The two-storey school accommodates around 400 students belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities, comprising 150 female students.
“As the girl students are housed on the ground floor, the local administration has started evacuating them to another residential school at Aul. Motorised boats have been pressed into service for the evacuation,” stated Pattamundai Block Development Officer Sheetal Agarwal.
Meanwhile, around 250 boys residing on the upper floor remain relatively secure, though authorities are closely supervising their condition, she said.
“If the situation worsens, they too will be evacuated to a safer location,” the BDO added.
Local administration is maintaining continuous surveillance on the swelling water levels while keeping dedicated rescue and relief arrangements fully mobilized.
