A 35-year-old man was arrested in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Thursday for the alleged murder of a senior citizen. According to police, the attack was triggered by an unpaid debt related to a blood donation the suspect had provided for the victim’s ailing daughter.

The incident took place in the Gopalpur area on Wednesday. Police officials have identified the suspect as Sunil Kumar Majhi, a resident of Gadasanaput under The incident took place in Gopalpur area on Wednesday in Puri district, who has recently been living in the Ganju area under Gopalpur police limits.

The victim was identified as 60-year-old Saita Das, an officer said.

Investigating officers revealed that Majhi had donated blood to Das’s daughter about a month ago during a medical emergency. On Wednesday, Majhi intercepted Das near the Ganju panchayat office as the older man was walking back from his agricultural field, and demanded the payment.

When Das requested to head home first before handing over the money, Majhi reportedly flew into a rage. He attacked the elderly man with an iron spade, striking him down until he lost consciousness, a police officer stated.

Bystanders quickly alerted Das’s family about the assault. He was rushed to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment, he said.

The accused was later arrested and further investigation was under progress, he added.
