Renowned Odia music director Abhijit Majumdar (54) is in critical condition and on ventilator support at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, according to hospital authorities.
According to the hospital sources, Majumdar was admitted to the AIIMS emergency ward in a comatose state at around 10 AM on Thursday. He was later shifted to the medical ICU at noon for advanced medical care.
Majumdar has multiple comorbid conditions including hypertension, hypothyroidism, and chronic liver disease.
Dr. Srikant Behera, assistant professor of general medicine at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, said, “Currently, he is critically ill in a comatose condition having pneumonia. His vitals (BP and Pulse) are stable.”
Majumdar fell ill while performing at music programmes during Ganesh Puja celebrations on August 27. He was initially admitted to the ICU of a hospital in Cuttack on August 31 after tests revealed a significant drop in his sodium levels, informed Orissa Cine Artistes Association general secretary Sritam Das.
BJD president and former chief minister Naveen Patnaik, in a post on X, expressed his concern praying for Majumdar’s good health and speedy recovery.
“I have learned that the distinguished music director and singer from Odisha, Abhijit Majumdar, is undergoing treatment at AIIMS due to illness. I pray to Lord Jagannath for his good health and speedy recovery,” Patnaik said.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan took to his X handle to pray for Majhumdar’s speedy recovery. “Odisha’s renowned music director and singer Abhijit Majumdar is unwell and undergoing treatment at Medical. Along with wishing for his good health and speedy recovery, we pray to Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath that he recovers soon and rejoins his work,” Pradhan wrote.
Ollywood superstar and close friend of Majumdar, Babushaan, went to AIIMS Bhubaneswar to visit the critically ill music director. After his visit, the actor asked his fans to pray for Majumdar’s quick recovery.
A prolific composer, Majumdar has created more than 700 songs for music albums. He is well known for his music in films such as ‘Love Story,’ ‘Sister Sridevi,’ ‘Golmaal Love,’ ‘Sundargarh Ra Salman Khan,’ and ‘Sriman Surdas.’
