After days of chase, Similipal tigress Zeenat finally captured in Bengal’s Bankura, tranquilized,put in cage

Kolkata-Tigress Zeenat, which had strayed from Odisha’s Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) to Bankura in West Bengal, was finally captured on Sunday afternoon after being sedated with tranquillisers, chief wildlife warden Debal Roy said.

The Forest officials of Odisha and West Bengal, were on high alert and were tracking her every movement, zeroed in on her. Accompanied by a tranquilising team, they rushed to the spot and encircled the area.

The three-year-old tigress was rendered unconscious after being shot by tranquilising dart. The Forest officials captured an unconscious Zenat in a cage and brought her to Alipore Zoo in Kolkata on Sunday afternoon, said Gogineni.

Zeenat would be kept under observation and her health condition checked by a team of veterinarians. When she would be found fit for movement, she would be brought back to Similipal, he added.

Zeenat was brought to Odisha’s Similipal from Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) in Maharashtra last month with the goal of introducing a new gene pool to the tiger population. Zeenat had strayed from Simlipal and travelled about 15 km to seek refuge in a forest in Manbazar block December 27 from Bandwan where she was holed up between December 24 and 26. She has been in West Bengal for nearly a week after crossing over from Jharkhand.
