Preparations for the historic Baripada Ratha Yatra, widely recognised as the second-largest chariot festival in Odisha after Puri, are moving at a rapid pace as artisans race against time to finish the three grand chariots ahead of the annual celebration on July 16.
Known as Dwitiya Srikhetra, Baripada is currently a hub of intense activity, with local craftsmen and the district administration working in close coordination to guarantee the seamless conduct of the centuries-old festival.
Every year, lakhs of devotees from across Odisha and neighbouring states reach the town to participate in the sacred tradition of pulling the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.
The construction of the three majestic chariots started on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya, and nearly 70 per cent of the work is now complete, thanks to the district administration securing specialised timber through the forest department.
A dedicated team of 12 artists is currently engaged in painting intricate traditional motifs onto the chariots, while a larger group of over 50 skilled Ratha Maharanas handle the core structural construction.
While recent bouts of heavy rainfall and other logistical challenges have caused minor setbacks, the craftsmen have intensified their efforts to ensure everything is finalized right on schedule.
The historic Jagannath Temple in Baripada, built in 1575 by King Baidyanath Bhanjdeo, carries massive religious and cultural weight in the region. The annual festival stands out as one of Odisha’s most prominent cultural events, beautifully highlighting the state’s rich heritage and deep-rooted traditions.
As the highly anticipated festival nears, devotees are finalizing their travel plans to Baripada to join the sacred rituals, a participation believed to bring immense blessings and prosperity.
The local administration, meanwhile, is prioritizing safety measures, public sanitation, and robust crowd management strategies to ensure a peaceful and successful event for the massive influx of pilgrims.
