Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday stated that opposition parties should prioritize accountability over interrupting parliamentary proceedings and favour constructive debate over political theatrics.
Majhi shared his remarks after Union Home Minister Amit Shah stepped up to address the various issues brought forward by the Congress.
“The strength of our democracy lies in the courage to debate, listen and answer. Hon’ble Union Home & Cooperation Minister Shri @AmitShah Ji has made it clear that the government is ready to discuss every issue and respond with facts. Now, the opposition must choose accountability over disruption and debate over political theatrics,” Majhi said in social media posts.
Emphasizing his point, CM Majhi noted that causing frequent disruptions breaches public trust and weakens democracy. He called on opposition members to opt for productive dialogue and responsibility instead of grandstanding.
The government’s push to hold a debate on ongoing student protests in the Lok Sabha on the second-to-last day of the Monsoon session hit a wall after the opposition declined Shah’s proposal of a two-day discussion covering the NEET paper leak allegations and related concerns, which would have concluded with his official reply.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju suggested that the Monsoon Session could be extended if the opposition agrees to a discussion on Thursday.
