A private tutor was taken into custody in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Friday for allegedly raping and impregnating a Class 9 student of a residential school while she was home during summer vacation, police said.
The incident came to light earlier this week during a routine medical examination at the school, which revealed that the girl was five months pregnant, after which school authorities informed her parents, they said.
According to the investigating officer, the parents spoke to their daughter after being alerted, following which she recounted the alleged sexual assault and threats she endured during her summer vacation.
Due to prevailing hot and humid weather conditions, local authorities had announced an early start to the summer vacation across area schools back in March.
In the police complaint lodged on Thursday, the girl’s parents alleged that the home tutor hired during her vacation took advantage of her being alone at home to assault her, threatening her with dire consequences if she disclosed the matter, a police officer stated.
An FIR was registered based on the complaint, and the tutor was arrested, the officer said.
