Odisha continued to reel under an intense cold wave as Similipal National Park recorded a bone-chilling minus 1 degree Celsius on Friday, marking the state’s lowest temperature of the season.

The observatory at Upar Barha Kamuda, situated within the core area of the tiger reserve, recorded a temperature of minus 1 degree Celsius, according to the state Forest Department.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, G. Udaygiri, a hill station in Kandhamal district saw the mercury plummet to 2.6 degrees Celsius, while the industrial town Rourkela and Jharsuguda registered 3.6 and 4.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Phulbani and Daringbadi recorded 5 and 6 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Monorama Mohanty, Director of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, said that the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack were also affected, with the capital city recording 9.4 degrees Celsius and the silver registering 8.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.

She said as many as 25 places in the state recorded temperatures below or at 10 degrees Celsius.

In Sundargarh district, the intense chill caused a thick layer of frost to blanket large sections of Koida, creating a snowy appearance across the landscape.

Cold wave conditions would continue in parts of Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Cuttack, Khurda and Angul till Saturday, the IMD said.
