A well-marked low-pressure area over the Strait of Malacca and adjoining South Andaman Sea is very likely to intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea on Monday, November 24, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.
“It is likely to further intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southeast Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 48 hours,” the IMD said in its last bulletin.
The developing system is expected to bring rainfall to several coastal districts of Odisha between November 25 and 27.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, briefing reporter, said that the state government is on alert and fully prepared to handle any situation arising from the possible cyclone.
We have made advance preparedness and additional measures so that the government machinery can easily tackle the system, even in case of further intensification,” Pujari stated.
The minister said that the system is currently about 1,000 km from the mainland, and clearer details regarding the path are of the possible cyclone will be clear on November 24.
He added that coastal districts might witness the effects of this weather system over the next three days.
