Former bureaucrat Sujata Rout Karthikeyan, the wife of VK Pandian, who served as a close aide to former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, formally joined the BJD on Thursday.
BJD President Naveen Patnaik stated during the event that he remains at the helm and will lead the party into the upcoming 2029 assembly elections.
Patnaik announced Sujatas’ induction during a gathering at Sankha Bhawan, the party’s headquarters in Bhubaneswar, which was attended by senior political figures from across the state.
“I would like to welcome Sujata Rout to the BJD. She will be joining the party as a simple member. She has been an IAS officer and held several important positions,” stated the leader of the opposition in the Odisha assembly.
“I am sure, as time passes, she will get used to her new position. She will learn to lead people, particularly women,” he added.
Amid growing rumours that Sujata might be positioned to take control of the party, Patnaik clarified that he would continue to lead the BJD in the next elections.
“I would like to repeat for the information of the media and all other people that, of course, I will lead the BJD in the next elections. I want to make it very clear,” he said.
Reflecting on Sujata’s career in the civil services, Patnaik noted that she successfully managed highly responsible portfolios and made significant contributions toward empowering women across the state and within the political framework.
“I am sure that as she gets used to being in the party and acclimatises herself to the work, she would prove to be a worthy member of the party,” the BJD chief said.
To alleviate any anxieties among senior leaders who suspected Pandian’s wife might immediately ascend to a leadership role, Patnaik reiterated, “She is joining as a simple member with no post assigned yet, allowing her time to acclimatise to party work.”
Attempting to revive regional party morale following the BJD’s heavy loss to the BJP in the 2024 elections, Patnaik expressed optimism, saying, “I feel the people of our beloved state will bless us, including me, again to form the government in Odisha to bring peace, prosperity and honesty.”
Sujata, a native of Kendrapara district in Odisha and married to her batchmate V K Pandian of Tamil Nadu origin, said she would work sincerely for the people of the state.
“I have availed opportunities to serve the people of Odisha for 24 years under the leadership of Naveen Patnaik. Today, I got the same opportunity again to serve the people of Odisha under his leadership,” she told reporters after joining the regional party.
“I will work for the people of Odisha with sincerity and dedication, with the blessings of Lord Jagannath, party leaders and millions of BJD workers,” she added.
She described Patnaik as her ultimate source of inspiration from her days in the bureaucracy, fondly remembering how he personally advised her during her tenures as district collector in Cuttack and Sundargarh.
As a member of the 2000 batch of IAS officers, Sujata took early retirement from the civil services on March 13, 2025. She is largely recognized for scaling up Mission Shakti, the flagship women’s self-help and empowerment initiative launched by the previous BJD government.
Her transition into political life follows shortly after her husband, Pandian, stepped down from active politics following the BJD’s defeat in both the state assembly and Lok Sabha elections of 2024.
While Pandian immediately stepped away from politics after the electoral disappointment, Sujata stayed in her bureaucratic post for roughly nine months after the BJP took power in Odisha before stepping down.
Her entry into the party met with quiet resistance from certain veteran BJD leaders, many of whom hold Pandian accountable for the party’s devastating performance in the 2024 polls.
In the meantime, an official press statement from the BJD claimed that Sujata’s arrival would significantly bolster the party’s strength at the grassroots level.
The induction ceremony was packed with party MPs, MLAs, president of different frontal organisations, district presidents and several senior leaders of the party were present at the special function.
Sujata Rout received a highly energetic and celebratory reception upon her arrival at Sankha Bhawan.
Even so, the event saw notable absences from several prominent leaders, including former minister Badri Narayan Patra, BJD deputy legislative leader Prasanna Acharya, and veteran eight-term lawmaker Ranendra Pratap Swain.
Aiswarya Biswal, the state chief of the ruling BJP’s Mahila Morcha, however, said that Sujata’s political debut would not harm the saffron party’s standing in Odisha.
“Though she is said to be the champion of women’s empowerment by BJD leaders, the women of Odisha supported the BJP in the 2024 elections. Her joining the BJD will have no impact on our party.” Biswal said.
