Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, on Wednesday, said that farmer incomes across Odisha have seen a substantial rise under his administration’s tenure.

The Chief Minister made these remarks while inaugurating the three-day ‘Matsya Pranee Samavesh Odisha’ event at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar.

Speaking to a crowd of more than 8,000 farmers, Majhi emphasised that Odisha remains a primarily agrarian state, with 60 per cent of its population relying on agriculture and related sectors for their livelihoods.

He criticised the previous BJD government, noting it was unfortunate that despite being in power for nearly 25 years, they failed to raise the monthly earnings of the state’s farmers effectively.

CM Majhi pointed out that, according to reports, the monthly income for an Odisha farmer was just Rs 5,112, placing the state in the second-to-last position nationwide.

“After the BJP formed the government in the state, we immediately took a cabinet decision to provide an additional input subsidy of Rs 800 per quintal in addition to the MSP so that the farmers get Rs 3,100 per quintal of paddy,” he said.

The CM highlighted that farmers now receive Rs 6,000 annually through PM Kisan and Rs 4,000 through the CM-Kisan scheme, while women in these families are also benefiting from Rs 10,000 under the Subhadra initiative.

Majhi further noted that his government has disbursed Rs 262 crore in financial aid to 4.73 lakh beneficiaries through the Mukhya Mantri Kamdhenu Yojana.

He added that various other subsidies and financial support packages have been extended to those working in the agriculture, fisheries, and animal husbandry departments.

Under the current BJP government, the average farm family now receives approximately Rs 61,000 per year—a clear indicator of enhanced prosperity—with further efforts underway to increase this figure, the CM said.

Majhi reaffirmed the state’s commitment to becoming self-sufficient in fish, meat, poultry, and egg production, noting that while Odisha currently ranks fourth in fish production, the goal is to reach the top spot.

During the address, the Chief Minister issued a stern warning in the state to refrain from such illegal activities, otherwise, strict action will be taken.

The ‘Matsya Pranee Samavesh Odisha’ was organised by the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department to educate farmers on boosting yields through modern technological adoption.

The convention, under the theme ‘Innovative interventions in fisheries and livestock for Viksit Odisha’, will continue till January 23. More than 8,000 farmers, entrepreneurs and women SHG members are attending the event on different days.

As part of the ‘Ask the Minister’ segment, farmers have the unique opportunity to pose direct questions to Minister Gokulananda Mallick for immediate feedback.

More than 100 exhibitors from across the country involving various companies, NGOs, national-level institutions, state government departments and directorates, and cooperatives have gathered at Janata Maidan to display modern technologies in fisheries, animal resources and agriculture sectors in around 208 stalls.

On this occasion, a walkathon from Kalinga Stadium to Janata Maidan was organised this morning.
