The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday informed that a low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to trigger heavy rainfall in several parts of Odisha.
The low-pressure system developed on Monday morning over the northeast Bay of Bengal due to an upper-air cyclonic circulation, the IMD stated in its bulletin.
The IMD also anticipated another low-pressure area to form over the east-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around September 25. Both systems are expected to bring heavy rain to Odisha until September 28.
On Monday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., heavy rainfall was recorded in several areas, including Koraput (80.8 mm), Sambalpur (39.2 mm), Titlagarh (39 mm), Bhadrak (37 mm), Bolangir (24 mm), and Boudh (20 mm).
The weather office forecasted heavy rainfall for Tuesday in the districts of Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jharsuguda, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi. Additionally, thunderstorms with lightning are expected in other parts of the state, it said.
Between September 21 and 25, squally weather with wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph, and gusting up to 60 kmph, may also prevail along Odisha coast and the north Bay of Bengal, the IMD bulletin said.
Heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 30-40 kmph is likely in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts, it said.
The IMD has issued an ‘orange’ warning (be prepared to take action) for the two districts.
