In one incident, a landslide in Bastriguda village under R. Udayagiri police limits around 4:30 pm on Thursday killed 50-year-old Trinath Nayak, a resident of the village.
Separately, 40-year-old Laxman Mallik of Bandhaguda village in Gajapati’s Mohana area was washed away in the Ludru Nala on Thursday evening while attempting to rescue his calf due to the strong water current. His body was recovered the following morning.
Meanwhile, over 24 hours have passed, rescue teams are still searching for 35-year-old Rajika Sabar and his elderly father Kartik Sabar of Mahulsahi village in Gajapati. The duo is reportedly trapped under debris from a massive landslide near their village.
Police sources stated the father and son had gone to their agricultural field for work on Thursday morning, and the landslide occurred near their field around 1:30 pm.
Villagers suspect they may have been buried by the landslide since they haven’t returned, though some also fear they may be missing due to the nala flooding.
Notably, several parts of the state experienced massive rainfall on Thursday due to a low-pressure area that formed off the Odisha Coast.
