Heavy rainfall is expected to continue in several parts of Odisha till August 16 as a low-pressure system is expected to develop over the Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.
According to the latest bulletin from IMD’s Bhubaneswar Regional Centre, an active upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal is anticipated to concentrate into a low-pressure area around August 12.
The weather agency has issued a yellow alert, urging residents to exercise caution, for several districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Cuttack.
The bulletin further stated the likelihood of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds in various parts of the state throughout the day.
Monsoon activity is predicted to gather strength and intensify significantly between August 12 and August 15.
Owing to expected rough to very rough sea conditions, meteorologists have cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea along and off the Odisha coastline from August 11 to August 14.
Meanwhile, several parts of the state, including Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, received rainfall during the day.
Severe rainfall disrupted normal life in Rourkela, where torrential water inundated roads and submerged low-lying residential pockets, causing severe hindrance for commuters.
A temporary construction shed situated at the Rourkela railway station also reportedly suffered structural damage due to heavy rain.
In Bhadrak district, water levels in the Salandi and Baitarani rivers recorded a steady rise, resulting in floodwaters breaching low-lying areas and entering several villages in the Tihidi block, officials said.
