The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that a thunderstorms accompanied by lightning strikes, and heavy rainfall is expected to batter several parts of Odisha over the coming four days.
According to the latest bulletin from the IMD’s Bhubaneswar centre, heavy rainfall would occur over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Rayagada this Monday.
Similarly, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds are anticipated to occur in some places of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh districts on Monday.
Furthermore, residents in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh should prepare for hot and humid conditions on July 13, the weather office said.
The IMD has placed these districts under a “yellow warning,” advising citizens to remain vigilant. The weather bureau added that rainy weather conditions are likely to continue dominating the state’s weather system for an additional three days.
The IMD further stated that Odisha has accumulated an average of 348.1 mm of rain since the start of this year’s monsoon up until Sunday. This figure marks an 8 percent increase over the historical baseline average of 323.6 mm for this timeframe.
A district-by-district breakdown reveals an uneven distribution: a massive surplus of rainfall was concentrated in just three districts – Sonepur, Boudh, and Kandhamal – while seven districts are currently experiencing a rain deficit. Meanwhile, seven other districts recorded notably received excess downpour, and it was normal in the remaining 13 districts, it said.
