Torrential rainfall triggered by a low-pressure system lashed most parts of Odisha on Monday, with eight places recording over 100 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours ending at 8:30 AM, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather office reported that four places in the state recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall, while 47 places experienced heavy downpours during the time period.
Joda in Keonjhar district recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 169.4 mm, followed by Papadahandi in Nabarangpur (158.8 mm) and Paikmal in Bargarh (120 mm), the IMD stated in its bulletin.
Other regions recording over 100 mm of rainfall included Kusumi and Jashipur in Mayurbhanj district, Jharigaon in Nabarangpur, alongside Telkoi and Champua in Keonjhar.
The low-pressure system was lay over Gangetic West Bengal and adjacent areas of Jharkhand and northern Odisha on Monday morning, the IMD bulletin stated.
The weather system is expected to move northwestwards across Jharkhand and northern Odisha over the next 24 hours.
Under its influence, heavy rainfall is likely in 16 of the 30 districts in Odisha on Monday, it said.
The IMD has issued an ‘Orange Warning’ (be prepared) for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, and Boudh districts for Monday, while a ‘Yellow Warning’ (be aware) remains in place for Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also expected to prevail across several other regions of the state on Monday, it said.
The weather agency added that similar weather conditions are likely to continue across Odisha for the next six days, the bulletin added.
In view of the rainfall, all schools and anganwadi centres were shut in Nabarangpur district, while 89 schools remained closed in Bhadrak on Monday, officials said.
