Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a leading infrastructure conglomerate, on Tuesday announced that it has secured an order worth between Rs 2,500 crore and Rs 5,000 crore. The order, awarded by a joint venture between Coal India Limited (CIL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), is for the establishment of a coal-to-ammonium nitrate facility in Odisha.
The project is expected to yield 2,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate per day. The output is intended to decrease the nation’s reliance on imports, conserve foreign exchange reserves, and enhance India’s internal industrial strength within the energy and chemical sectors.
“L&T Energy Hydrocarbon Onshore has won large order from Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd (BCGCL), a joint venture of Coal India Ltd (CIL) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL),” the infrastructure major said in an exchange filing to the bourses.
The scope of the contract involves the development of both nitric acid and ammonium nitrate plants. L&T will execute the project on a lump sum turnkey basis, managing the process from design to completion.
“Once operational, the facility will enable the conversion of coal into ammonium nitrate with a planned production capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day, supporting the growing requirements of India’s mining, infrastructure and industrial sectors,” the filing said.
L&T’s responsibilities for the project include basic design, comprehensive detailed engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC), as well as general project management and the ultimate handover of the operational plant.
