A 28-year-old mentally challenged man died from his injuries on Wednesday after he was allegedly assaulted by a crowd for fatally attacking two persons with a sharp weapon in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, according to police.
The violent encounter occurred early on Wednesday morning at Kulughutu village under the Tiring police station limits.
According to police, the accused, identified as Mochka Alda (28) launched a sudden and unprovoked attack on two men on a road near his residence.
The victims, 48-year-old Budheswar Rana and 62-year-old Gopinath Sardar, suffered severe head injuries and died at the scene, police said.
Immediately following the killings, local villagers overpowered the accused and reportedly beat him, resulting in severe injuries to both of his legs, according to Rairangpur SDPO Birendra Kumar Senapati.
Upon being alerted to the situation, a police team arrived at the village and took Alda into their custody, the officer said.
“The accused has been shifted to Rairangpur hospital under police custody for treatment. He succumbed to injuries while under treatment at the hospital,” Senapati said.
Authorities conducted a formal inquest of the victims’ bodies in the presence of their relatives and local witnesses before transferring them for post-mortem examination.
The weapon used in the crime has been seized, and further investigation is underway, officials said.
