Former Odisha Chief Minister and BJD chief, Naveen Patnaik, was admitted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Sunday after he reportedly fell ill.
Patnaik, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the Odisha Assembly, was admitted to the private hospital on Sunday afternoon after suffering from dehydration, as per reports.
Meanwhile, the health condition of Patnaik is stable, and he is responding well to treatment, the hospital authorities informed.
“Shri Naveen Patnaik was admitted to SUM Ultimate Medicare, Bhubaneswar, at 5.15 pm today due to dehydration. His condition is stable and he is responding well to treatment,” said the bulletin issued by the private hospital.
On Saturday night, the 78-year-old BJD supremo had complained of uneasiness after which some doctors had visited his residence, Naveen Niwas, party leaders said.
Earlier in the day, BJD leaders said that he was admitted due to age-related ailments.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan prayed for speedy recovery of Patnaik.
After hearing the news of Patnaik’s health, Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling and Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan paid a visit to the hospital and enquired about the health condition of the BJD stalwart.
In a post on X, Majhi wished a speedy recovery and good health of Patnaik. “I came to know about the illness of the opposition leader, Honourable @Naveen_Odisha. I pray to Lord Shri Jagannath for his speedy recovery and good health,” wrote CM Majhi.

Union Education Minister Pradhan said, “I came to know that the former Chief Minister of Odisha, opposition leader @Naveen_Odisha is unwell. I pray to Lord Shri Jagannath for his good health and speedy recovery.”
In a post on X, the Biju Janata Dal stated: “BJD President and Leader of the Opposition @Naveen_Odisha
is undergoing treatment at a Bhubaneswar hospital after suffering from dehydration. His condition is improving, and he is expected to be discharged soon.”
The party added that the blessings of Lord Jagannath and the goodwill of the people of Odisha are with Naveen Patnaik as he continues his recovery.
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida also prayed for Patnaik’s speedy recovery. “Got to know about the illness of the opposition leader Shri @Naveen_Odisha. I pray to Lord Shri Jagannath for his good health and speedy recovery,” she said.
Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das, in an X post, said, “I am deeply concerned upon hearing the news of the illness of former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition, Shri @Naveen_Odisha. I pray to Lord Jagannath for his speedy recovery and good health.”
It may be noted that Patnaik had gone to Mumbai on June 20 where he underwent spinal surgery for cervical arthritis on June 22. “As advised by medical experts, I would be undergoing a procedure for cervical arthritis on the 22nd of this month at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. My personal doctor, Dr Ramakant Panda, is coordinating this in Mumbai. With blessings of Lord Jagannatha and good wishes of my brothers and sisters of Odisha, looking forward to returning soon to continue to serve all of you,” the BJD president had announced on June 18.
Later, he was discharged from the hospital after recovery and returned to Odisha on July 7. “I would like to thank the entire medical team of @KDAHMumbai and @GangaWebteam for providing excellent medical service and taking great care of me pre-surgery and post-surgery. Heartfelt thanks to everyone from #Odisha and outside for their wishes and prayers for my health,” Patnaik wrote in another X post on July 7.
Naveen Patnaik is the founder president of Biju Janata Dal (BJD). He took over the position after his father and former CM Biju Patnaik. The BJD was in power from 2000 to 2024 five times in a row before getting defeated in the 2024 elections.
