The well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and adjoining parts of the Odisha-West Bengal coastline has intensified into a depression, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.

At present, the weather system is positioned approximately 130 km south-southeast of Sagar Island (West Bengal), 140 km southeast of Digha (West Bengal), 170 km east of Chandbali (Odisha) and 180 km east-southeast of Balasore (Odisha), the weather office said.

According to the weather office, the system is expected to move northwestward and intensify further into a deep depression over the next 24 hours and cross the North Odisha-West Bengal coast between Paradip and Sagar Island around Monday noon.

Under its influence, widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated across major parts of Odisha through July 29.

Extreme heavy rainfall is expected in Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Angul, and Dhenkanal districts on Sunday, prompting the IMD to issue a severe ‘red alert’ (take action) for these areas.
