Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday inaugurated India’s inaugural Flat Rolled Products (FRP) facility and a specialised battery-grade aluminium foil manufacturing facility by Hindalco Industries Ltd, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group, in Sambalpur district, according to an official release.

The Chief Minister also presided over the ground-breaking ceremony for the Aditya Aluminium Smelter Capacity expansion, a project involving a massive investment of Rs 21,162 crore.

The newly inaugurated aluminium FRP unit was constructed for Rs 5,000 crore, while the specialised battery foil plant saw an investment of Rs 834 crore.

Officials stated that the total value of the Hindalco projects launched stands at Rs 26,996 crore. These projects are expected to create 5,012 jobs, further strengthening downstream manufacturing and creating new livelihood opportunities in the region.

The newly commissioned FRP and battery-grade aluminium foil facility is set to become a cornerstone in indigenising raw materials for lithium-ion batteries, supporting up to 100 GWh of cell manufacturing capacity.

By sourcing inputs directly from the FRP complex, the integrated facility establishes a comprehensive aluminium value chain in Odisha, ranging from primary metal production to high-tech applications in electric vehicles, defence, energy storage, and renewable power.

A company official said that since roughly 40 per cent of India’s flat-rolled aluminium is currently imported, the expansion is poised to drastically lower the nation’s reliance on foreign shipments.

Addressing the gathering, CM Majhi said, “Western Odisha now stands as a symbol of confidence, discipline and enterprise transforming from forests and farmlands into a hub of world-class manufacturing.”

Emphasising that workers are the real architects of the state’s industrial triumph, CM Majhi said that their commitment ensures uninterrupted progress. “Development is not measured only by investments or announcements, but by real change in people’s lives, jobs for youth, security for families, and better education and healthcare,” he said.

The chief minister said a new industrial revolution has begun in Odisha. “The state is moving forward with nearly Rs 20 lakh crore in industrial proposals for new industry establishments,” he said, adding that once these become operational, around 15 lakh new jobs will be created.

Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group, said, “India’s manufacturing growth depends on integration, value addition and sustainability. Through Hindalco, we are building a fully integrated aluminium ecosystem that spans from upstream resources to high-value downstream products. Our long-standing partnership with Odisha continues to play an important role in this journey. This strategy strengthens India’s self-reliance, supports critical sectors, and accelerates the nation’s transition towards advanced, sustainable manufacturing.”

Satish Pai, Managing Director, Hindalco Industries Ltd, said, “The FRP expansion and smelter growth at Sambalpur exemplify our integrated upstream–downstream growth strategy. This enables Hindalco to deliver high-quality aluminium solutions across packaging, defence, electric mobility, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing, positioning us strongly to support India’s industrial ambitions while creating long-term value.

Following the events in Sambalpur, the Chief Minister inaugurated the 25th CII Enterprise Odisha Exhibition 2026 in Rourkela. The expo serves as a premier stage for leading companies to display their technological innovations and industrial milestones.

Enterprise Odisha is a flagship industry platform aimed at showcasing Odisha’s industrial capabilities and investment opportunities.

The Expo inaugural evening featured a cultural programme and the first drone show of Rourkela, showcasing the rich cultural heritage, social life, and industrial progress of Western Odisha.
