Cyber police arrested a man from West Bengal on Sunday for his alleged involvement in an online cheating scheme involving approximately Rs 50 lakh, according to a police officer.
The arrested accused has been identified as Arabinda Paul (46), a resident of Hooghly district, police said.
Police said that the victim was lured by an online investment platform that promised exceptionally high returns. The accused and his accomplices allegedly coerced the complainant into transferring funds into various bank accounts registered under fictitious company names.
The complainant deposited a total of Rs 50.16 lakh in different accounts but failed to receive any of the promised returns. Realising the deception, the individual filed a formal complaint at the cyber police station in Bhubaneswar.
According to ACP Suchismita Das, the officer in charge of the cyber police station, the defrauded money was transferred to six different bank accounts across states, including West Bengal, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
Notably, more than Rs 1 lakh was traced directly to the bank account of the arrested individual, Das said.
A total of 17 cases are pending against the arrested fraudster in different police stations, she said.
