Odisha DGP Y.B. Khurania on Sunday directed police officers to accelerate the execution of non-bailable warrants (NBWs) and to apply the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against notorious and habitual offenders, and to intensify raids to curb drug trafficking.

The directions were issued during a high-level review meeting held on Sunday afternoon at the DGP’s Camp Office in Bhubaneswar, chaired by DGP Khurania.

In the virtual review meeting on law and order, the DGP directed all district SPs and Range IGs and DIGs, Khurania instructed officers to intensify action against drug trafficking and strengthen beat patrolling across all police station areas.

The DGP also directed the officers to take special and effective steps for crime control, and to further strengthen trust and coordination between the police and the public.

The DGP directed that all personnel deployed in Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs) be provided professional and practical training, expressing confidence that such training would enhance their efficiency and rapid response capability in critical and emergency situations.

He further directed that a regular “Briefing Parade” be conducted at all police stations across the state every day before 9 AM, and that its proper observance and regular monitoring be ensured.

Following the briefing parade, he emphasized the need to review and discuss the law and order situation in the respective station areas, crime-prone zones, movement of criminals, and ongoing investigations — thereby strengthening coordination, alertness, and rapid response at the police station level.

These directives follow a period of heightened public concern regarding state security. High-profile incidents, such as the May 7 lynching of a GRP constable near Bhubaneswar over allegations of attempted rape and a brazen daylight assault in Puri district’s Kanas area, have put the department under intense scrutiny.

Expressing concern over the lynching incident, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday directed the DGP to take strong measures to ensure the rule of law is maintained in the state.
