The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 200 additional seats for MBBS courses for the two newly built government medical colleges in Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said on Tuesday, September 2.
As per the approval, 100 seats have been allocated each for the Government Medical College in Kandhamal’s Phulbani and Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Government Medical College in Angul’s Talcher. Academic sessions at both institutions will start from the current 2025–26 academic year.
Welcoming the decision, CM Majhi stated that Odisha has achieved another milestone in the field of medical education.
With this, an additional 200 students from Odisha will now be able to pursue medical education each year starting from the current academic session, the CM added.
Taking to X, Majhi said, “On behalf of the people of Odisha, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji and Hon’ble Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Shri @JPNadda ji, for approving the establishment of Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Medical College, Talcher with 100 MBBS seats from the academic year 2025-26.”
This decision will provide new opportunities in medical education and significantly strengthen healthcare services in Talcher and nearby regions, ensuring better access to quality healthcare for the people of Odisha, he said.
Since the new government took charge, the state government has been making continuous efforts to improve health services and health education in Odisha, Majhi said.

In August, Odisha’s Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling had written a letter to Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda seeking his urgent intervention regarding the grant of Letters of Permission ( LoPs) for the admission of 100 MBBS students at Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Government Medical College and Government Medical College for the Academic Year 2025-26 under Odisha University of Health Science.
