The Odisha government issued a warning on Monday that some low-lying areas in the Mahanadi delta region, specifically in Puri and Jagatsinghpur, are likely to be inundated as the river is currently in spate.
According to Chandrasekhar Padhi, the Engineer-in-Chief of the Water Resources Department, there is no flood threat in any part of the state. However, the flow of approximately 5 lakh cusecs of water in the Mahanadi River at Mundali, near Cuttack, could cause some impact on the delta region.
He noted that the water level of the Mahanadi River at Mundali is gradually decreasing, from 6.26 lakh cusecs on Sunday to 4.58 lakh cusecs on Monday.
The district authorities have been notified about the current situation in the Mahanadi River.
In Jagatsinghpur, around 50 families of Tirtol area have been moved to safer locations after floodwaters entered their villages in the low-lying areas, a report said.
On Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely to continue in many parts of the state till September 13.
“Rainfall of varied intensity will continue in view of a cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay of Bengal & adjoining west central Bay of Bengal off south Odisha & north Andhra Pradesh,” informed Manorama Mohanty, Director of Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar.
The weather office also predicted thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places over the north and southern regions of the state.
