Odisha Police have arrested a 43-year-old college lecturer and one other person for allegedly parading the lecturer’s 37-year-old estranged wife and her male associate through the streets, suspecting them of having an extramarital relationship, police said on Thursday.
The incident happened on Tuesday night in Puri’s Nimapada town, where the two were publicly humiliated over the lecturer’s suspicion of the extramarital affair.
According to police, the lecturer and his friend barged into his estranged wife’s residence, where she had been living separately for several years and allegedly assaulted her.
The lecturer claimed his wife was in a relationship with the man, an allegation both victims have denied, police added.
A video of the incident, showing the lecturer and his associate assaulting the woman and her companion and parading them, has circulated widely on social media.
However, authenticity of the video is yet to be verified.
“We have arrested the lecturer and his associate on charges of outraging modesty of a woman, physically assaulting her, publicly humiliating them by making them parade on the streets,” Bamadev Swain, the inspector-in-charge of Nimapada police station, told PTI over phone.
The victim woman, who has a 14-year-old son, was staying separately in a rented accommodation at Nimapada town, police said.
