The body of an elderly woman was found buried inside the kitchen of a house in Odisha’s Puri town, police said on Tuesday.
The property houses several tenants, who alerted the landlord and police after noticing a strong, foul odour coming from a locked room, they said.
Upon breaking open the door, police officials discovered a newly constructed elevated platform under a concrete slab inside the kitchen, according to Puri SP Prateek Singh.
“The woman’s body was exhumed in the presence of an executive magistrate and forensic team. It seems that the body was buried three to four days ago,” Singh stated.
Preliminary inquiries indicate that the victim had been residing in the rented home alongside her son, Singh added.
“However, the son has been absent for the past few days, and the house was locked. We suspect the man killed his mother and buried the body. Efforts are underway to apprehend him,” the SP noted.
Singh said the body was sent for post-mortem examination and further investigation into the incident is underway.
