Police in Odisha’s Koraput district have invoked the National Security Act (NSA) to detain a history -sheeter, a senior police officer said on Thursday.
Invoking provisions under Section 3(2) of the National Security Act, police booked Sanjay Suna, who faces 25 criminal charges registered in the last 15 years across multiple police stations in the district, the officer said.
Suna’s extensive criminal record includes charges of attempted murder, extortion, dacoity, robbery, illegal possession and use of firearms under the Arms Act, as well as offenses under the NDPS Act.
The cases have been registered in Jeypore Town, Jeypore Sadar, Borigumma, B Singhpur, Kotpad, Koraput Sadar, and Nabarangpur police stations.
Jeypore SDPO Archita Mittal said that the preventive action was initiated to prevent Suna from involving in further unlawful activities and ensure the safety and security of the public.
“Given his extensive criminal antecedents and repeated involvement in severe offenses, preventive detention under the NSA was initiated to curb further illegal acts and ensure public safety. He is currently lodged at the Special Jail in Jeypore,” Mittal noted.
Police said they would continue to enforce stringent legal measures against persons who continue to jeopardize public peace and regional security.
