Odisha’s coastline is on the verge of a massive infrastructural makeover with the upcoming construction of the 160.18 km Rameshwar–Paradeep Coastal Highway, an official factsheet revealed on Sunday. The ambitious transit corridor is being developed by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) with a total capital investment of Rs 8,300.79 crore.

Engineered to offer a quicker, safer, and much smoother travel experience, the project will feature a 4-lane access-controlled highway extending from Rameshwar to Konark, transitioning into a 2-lane highway with paved shoulders from Konark to Paradeep. Built for a design speed of 100 km/hour, the completed corridor is projected to save nearly 2 hours and 30 minutes off the current travel time between Rameshwar and Paradeep, vastly improving both passenger movement and logistics efficiency.

Developed in close alignment with the core principles of the PM GatiShakti, the massive project will seamlessly integrate 9 economic nodes and 5 crucial logistics nodes into Odisha’s broader commercial network. Furthermore, it will guarantee significantly better road access to major regional hubs, including the bustling Paradeep Port, Puri Railway Station, the upcoming Puri Airport, and surrounding commercial centres.

The high-speed corridor will pass through the four coastal districts of Khurda, Puri, Kendrapada, and Jagatsinghpur, creating a seamless connection between important cultural, religious, tourism and economic destinations.

The expressway will enhance road connectivity between Odisha’s most sacred sites – the world-famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, the historic Konark Sun Temple, and the deeply revered Ramchandi Temple, making the pilgrimage experience far more convenient for millions of devotees visiting Odisha every year.

The upgrade to the state’s road infrastructure is expected to not only reduce on-road delays but also elevate the travel comfort of domestic and international tourists alike. The upcoming airport infrastructure in the region will further strengthen Odisha’s position as a major spiritual tourism destination, enabling easier access for visitors from across India and the world.

Beyond religion, the Rameshwar-Paradeep corridor is set to serve as a scenic gateway for coastal tourism, connecting pristine beaches, heritage landmarks, biodiversity hotspots, and local villages along Odisha’s eastern coastline.

With improved connectivity between Puri, Konark, and Paradeep with high-speed links, these major hubs will transform into a unified, easy-to-navigate tourism circuit that allows travellers to experience everything from ancient architecture to beaches and natural ecosystems.

The highway is anticipated to unlock fresh commercial potential for beach tourism, nature-based travel, and eco-tourism while providing easier access to important ecological destinations, including wildlife areas and the famous Gahirmatha turtle nesting sites.

Better connectivity will also encourage sustainable tourism practices by increasing awareness about Odisha’s unique coastal biodiversity and conservation initiatives, giving travellers firsthand access to these landscapes while funding responsible tourism programs that safeguard the environment.

Finally, the new highway is poised to create widespread economic opportunities for local communities, driving the organic growth of hotels, homestays, restaurants, traditional handicraft markets, and roadside businesses all along the coastal route.
