Union Minister of Steel & Heavy Industries H D Kumaraswamy, on Tuesday, inaugurated a modern steel-making facility at SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) and underscored the project’s importance for the region’s socio-economic development.

Kumaraswamy keenly observed the operations and the casting of slab in the Caster-4 and congratulated the RSP collective for the successful rollout of the project.

“The Government of India, under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, is committed to providing all necessary support for the growth and development of Rourkela Steel Plant,” he added.

The upcoming facility integrates advanced technology for energy-efficient, high-quality pellet production, enabling improved raw material utilisation and supporting long-term capacity enhancement, informed Kumaraswamy in a post shared from his X handle.

The plant features grate-kiln technology, 2 million tonnes annual pellet output capacity, specialised ore screening & grinding units, filtration systems, ESP & bag filter-based air cleaning mechanisms, hot air recirculation, zero liquid discharge-aligned systems, automated PLC-SCADA controls, VFD-based motors, and other modern auxiliary infrastructure reaffirming SAIL’s commitment to environmentally responsible & industry-leading operations, the Union Steel Minister added.

Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Jual Oram, who visited the plant along with Kumaraswamy, lauded the efforts of the RSP collective and assured continued support for the progress of the steel plant, recalling his fond memories associated with Plant.

Amarendu Prakash, Chairman – Cum- Managing Director (CMD), SAIL also spoke on the occasion and commended the RSP collective for their dedication and performance.

Earlier in the day, Kumaraswamy arrived at Rourkela on a two-day visit to SAIL’s RSP today.

Soon after his arrival, Kumaraswamy along Oram proceeded to the plant. The plant visit commenced from the Model Room of Learning & Development Department. There he was appraised with the functioning of the entire plant.

Earlier this year, SAIL had announced ambitious plans to more than double the plant’s capacity from its current level to around 9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

This expansion, with an estimated investment of Rs 30,000 crore, is designed to significantly enhance supplies to critical sectors like defence, oil and gas, and automobiles, the statement said.
