The Odisha government has decided to implement a five-year integrated plan focused on the ecological restoration and sustainable development of Chilika Lake, the largest brackish water lagoon in Asia.

The landmark decision was taken during a high-level Chilika Development Authority (CDA) meeting on Monday evening, chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

Highlighting the lagoon’s ecological significance, Majhi emphasised that Chilika represents a vital pillar of the state’s biodiversity and demands rigorous protection efforts.

“Chilika is a treasure trove of our biodiversity and all possible steps need to be taken for its protection,” the CM said.

The proposed roadmap prioritises hydraulic health through the excavation of the lake’s mouth and extensive dredging of essential feeder channels at Palur, Magarmukha, and Balugaon to clear accumulated silt. These technical interventions are designed to ensure the lagoon remains a thriving environment for its diverse species.

Furthermore, the plan outlines the setting up of modern fish landing centres to bolster local fisheries. It also invests in research and development infrastructure specifically geared toward monitoring salinity levels and enhancing the lagoon’s overall biological health.

The implementation of the plan is expected to take five years, officials said.

In addition to restoration, the Chief Minister instructed officials to draft a dedicated plan for tourism development in the lagoon.

The vision includes elevating Chilika’s profile through bird, seafood, and boat festivals, alongside the construction of a new lighthouse and a specialised interpretation centre to educate visitors.

The chief minister also directed officials to prepare a separate plan for tourism development in the lagoon.
