Odisha witnessed heavy rainfall on Tuesday, August 19, as the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Under the influence of depression over the south interior of Odisha, extremely heavy rainfall is likely over north Konkan, including Mumbai, south Gujarat, and Central Maharashtra on August 19 and August 20.
While Saurashtra and Kutch are likely to receive the shower from August 19 to August 21, and Vidarbha and north Telangana on August 19.
“Yesterday’s well marked Low pressure area over westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts concentrated into a depression at 1730 hours IST of 18th August over northwest & adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal and north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coasts,” the IMD said in its bulletin released at 1.15 PM today.
“It moved westnorthwestwards and lay centred at 0830 hrs IST of today, the 19th August over south interior Odisha. It is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards across south Odisha and south Chhattisgarh and weaken into a well-marked low pressure area during next 12 hours,” added the IMD.
Among the districts that received heavy rain are Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati and Kandhamal, the IMD had said in the morning bulletin.
Rain is likely in most parts of the state during August 21 to August 23, the IMD officials said.
Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised not to venture along and off Sri Lanka, Andhra Pradesh-Odisha coasts for August 19 to 21; over most parts Bay of Bengal during August 19; most parts of central, northwest Bay of Bengal and many parts of south Bay of Bengal for August 20; most parts of south & central Bay of Bengal and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal for August 21; most parts of north Bay of Bengal and many parts of central Bay of Bengal during August 22 to August 24; along and off Tamil Nadu coast during August 19; along and off West Bengal coast on August 19, 20, 22 and 23, the IMD added.
Landslides, submergence of roads and bridges, and uprooting of trees were reported from the southern districts of Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangpur, they said.
In Odisha, the IMD advised to make arrangements to drain out excess water from the fields of rice, maize, green gram, black gram, ginger, turmeric, vegetables and orchards in Eastern Ghat High Land Zone and South Eastern Ghats.
