IMD issues warning for heavy rainfall in several parts in Odisha

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall warning across various parts of Odisha over the next few days due to the formation of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal on Sunday, August 17.

The low-pressure area formed over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts at 8.30 AM on Sunday.

In a bulleting on Sunday, the IMD stated, “Under the influence of the upper air cyclonic circulation over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts, a Low Pressure area has formed over the same region at 1430 hrs IST of today, 17th August 2025.”

“The associated cyclonic circulation extends upto 9.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height persists,” it added.

The IMD further predicted that the cyclonic circulation is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression during subsequent 24 hours and cross south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts around forenoon of August 19, 2025.

The IMD predicted that light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of Odisha due to the low pressure system.

IMD warning for several Odisha districts

 

Issuing a red warning, the IMD said isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri and Nawarangpur on August 18 and 19.

Similarly, orange warning was issued, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm and lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places over the districts of Kalahandi, Rayagada and Gajapati, for the next two days.

The IMD issued yellow warning stating that heavy rainfall and thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph isvery likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Ganjam, Kandhamal , Boudh , Sonepur, Bolangir, Nuapada and Nawarangpur on August 18 and 19.

Similarly, thunderstorm with lightning with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi and Rayagada, the IMD said issuing a yellow warning in these districts for two days.

The IMD has issued a red warning alerting about extremely heavy rain fall at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur on Monday.

Several districts across Odisha are likely to face rainfall on the next three days due to the low-pressure area formed on Sunday.

The IMD has also anticipated that districts such as Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi may experience damage to plantations, horticultural crops, and standing crops.

Additionally, kutcha houses, walls, and huts could be affected, along with the possibility of road flooding, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and occurrences of localised landslides, mudslides, land or mud slips, and sinking of land or mud.
