The Odisha State Commission for Women (SCW) has demanded a report from the Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) regarding the alleged gunpoint rape of a woman inside her residence on Wednesday night.

A 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped at gunpoint by an unidentified “masked man” who broke into her rented apartment under Nayapalli police station limits in Bhubaneswar, according to police.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the matter, the SCW requested a comprehensive status report from the Bhubaneswar DCP to be submitted within 15 days, officials said.

SCW member Urmila Mohapatra visited the Nayapalli police station on Friday and held discussion with the investigating officers handling the case.

“Women are safe in Odisha. However, incidents can happen anywhere-inside a home, at a bus terminal, or while commuting on the road. But the depraved mindset of certain youths needs to be changed,” Mohapatra stated while speakingto reporters.

Emphasizing that the state government is treating the matter with utmost seriousness, she noted that the police force is carrying out an in-depth investigation to uncover the facts surrounding the crime.

“The victim is unknown to the accused. The police are investigating in accordance with the complaint made by the victim, and I hope the accused will be arrested soon,” she said.

“We have deployed multiple teams to solve the case and apprehend the accused. The investigation has reached an advanced stage,” Bhubaneswar DCP Saravana Vivek M.
