Brahmapur railway station in Odisha’s Ganjam district is set for a major overhaul with an investment of Rs 93.19 crore, an official stated on Saturday.
The redevelopment project is designed to transform the existing station into a modern, passenger-friendly, and sustainable smart transport hub capable of handling future growth in commuter traffic.
As part of the modernisation project, the station will feature a new three-story building, a 12-meter-wide foot overbridge, and an advanced quick-watering system. Additional upgrades include extending existing platforms and constructing dedicated two-lane bus drop-off points to streamline local transit, the official said.
To enhance the passenger experience, the redeveloped station will have a waiting hall with a capacity for 500 people, five escalators, and eight lifts. These additions aim to ensure seamless accessibility for all travellers.
The East Coast Railway official noted that the project will prioritise environmental sustainability through green building standards. Planned features include rooftop solar panels, rainwater harvesting, stormwater reuse systems, and a solid waste management framework focused on proper segregation, alongside a modern firefighting system.
The station’s facade and interior spaces will reflect the Silk City’s rich cultural heritage, he said.
By integrating elements inspired by local art, the station is intended to serve as a cultural landmark and a point of identity for the region rather than just a transit stop, he added.
The station handles around 162 trains daily and serves passengers from Ganjam, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Kalahandi and Balangir districts.
Berhampur MP Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy expressed his gratitude to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for sanctioning the project.
“I hope the other demands of the people of southern Odisha, like a new railway line and introduction of new trains from Berhampur to Puri, and a coaching depot, will be fulfilled soon,” Panigrahy said.
