Renowned Odia music composer and singer Abhijit Majumdar has passed away, a loss confirmed by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in an official post on X on Sunday.
Extending his condolences from his official social media handle, the Odisha CM wrote, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of renowned vocalist and music director Abhijit Majumdar. His demise is an irreparable loss to our music, cinema, and culture. I convey my condolences to the bereaved family and pray to Lord Shri Jagannath for the peace of the departed soul. Om Shanti.”
Majumdar died on Sunday while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, hospital authorities said.
Majumdar, 54, was admitted to the hospital on September 4 last year with hypertension, hypothyroidism and chronic liver disease.
After prolonged treatment in the ICU, he was shifted back to the medicine ward on November 10 for continuity of his care, AIIMS said in a statement.
He developed a new onset of fever (infection) on January 23, which was managed as per standard protocol, but he did not respond to treatment and developed refractory septic shock, it said.
“The Odia singer suffered a cardiac arrest this morning at 7.43 am and CPR was started as per ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) protocol. However, despite all the resuscitation efforts, he was clinically declared dead at 9.02 am,” the hospital bulletin said.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also condoled the demise of the artist stating, “Hearing the news of the demise of Abhijit Majumdar, the renowned music director and singer of Odisha, I am deeply saddened and heartbroken. Through his unique musical style, he had, over many decades, carved out a special place in the hearts of Odia listeners. His untimely departure is an irreparable loss for the Odia art world. While praying for the eternal peace of his soul, I extend my condolences to the bereaved family members. Om Shanti.”
Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik said Majumdar’s contributions to the Odia music world will always remain memorable. He also extended deepest condolences to the bereaved family members.
A wave of tributes and condolences has since surged from across both the music fraternity and the political landscape, as colleagues and leaders pay homage to Majumdar’s prolific career.
Devastated fans have also taken to various platforms to express their profound shock and disbelief at the news.
Odisha MP and BJP’s National Vice-President Baijayant Jay Panda, in an emotional tribute, described the tragic news as the “end of an era”.
“The end of an era in the Odia music world. Hearing the news of the untimely demise of Shri Abhijit Majumdar, Odisha’s renowned and popular music director and singer, has left me deeply saddened. His passing is an irreplaceable loss for the Odia music world. While praying for the departed soul’s eternal peace, I convey my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members,” he wrote.
As a titan of music composition in Odia cinema, Abhijit Majumdar remained a defining force in the state’s industry for several decades. His soulful work across countless films and independent albums earned him a massive and devoted following throughout Odisha.
According to Majumdar’s family, the mortal remains of the singer will be taken to his home in Cuttack, where the last rites will be performed.
