Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, today, announced that the civic body in Puri will be upgraded to a municipal corporation. With the elevation of Puri Municipality, it will be the sixth municipal corporation in the state.
Majhi, speaking to reporters, said all the processes for the upgradation will start from July 5.
The significant announcement was made by the CM during a press briefing where he highlighted the urgent requirement for a modern administrative structure to accommodate the holy town’s rapid growth and importance as a religious and tourist hub.
“The government has decided to upgrade the Puri Municipality to a municipal corporation. Puri Mahanagara Nigam will be formed with areas in Puri town and the surrounding panchayats,” he said.
The CM further said that the proposed Puri Municipal Corporation will have about seven to eight panchayats in Puri Sadar and Brahmagiri blocks.
Stating that the BJP government was committed to make Puri the best religious and tourist destination in the country, the CM said, “The idea of a prosperous Odisha is impossible without the beautification and development of Puri town. Today’s announcement is part of the government’s vision for making a prosperous state.”
The Odisha Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), in post on X, wrote, The state government has taken special steps to promote the culture and traditions of Lord Jagannath and to develop Puri as an advanced spiritual tourism destination. The Honorable Chief Minister @MohanMOdisha has announced the transformation of Puri Municipality into a Municipal Corporation..”
Along with this, an announcement was also made to establish a world class Lord Jagannath Museum, library, and research centre in Puri.

“Through various mediums such as paintings, sculptures, and Pattachitra, the Lord Jagannath Museum will showcase the heritage, history, and mythological significance of Jagannath culture, while the research center will encourage study and research. This project will enrich the culture, literature, and traditions of Lord Jagannath and play a significant role in establishing Puri as one of India’s premier spiritual tourism centers,” the post added.
At present, there are five municipal corporations in Odisha — Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Berhampur, Sambalpur and Rourkela. Puri will be the sixth one.
