A history-sheeter sustained injuries during an early-morning shootout with police in Odisha’s Bhadrak district, an official said on Thursday.
The armed confrontation occurred around 3 AM on Thursday in the Nuasahi locality, under the jurisdiction of the Bhadrak Rural police station. The injured miscreant has been identified as Prafulla Mallik, also known as Pappu, who suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg but remains in stable condition, according to Dr. Rakesh Behera at the Bhadrak District Headquarters Hospital.
Following initial treatment, Pappu was transferred to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for further medical care, police noted, revealing that the suspect is linked to approximately 25 criminal cases registered across various police stations in the Bhadrak and Balasore districts.
According to police, the encounter took place when a police team raided a hideout where Pappu and an accomplice were actively plotting a robbery. “The suspect fired two rounds at our personnel, forcing us to shoot back in self-defense, which resulted in Pappu getting hit in his right leg,” stated an officer who was part of the tactical operation.
A country-made gun, two used cartridges, and two live ammunition were recovered from the place of occurrence, police said. His associate, however, managed to flee the spot.
