The southwest monsoon made its entry into Odisha on Friday, reaching several areas within the northern part of the state, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather department noted that atmospheric conditions remain highly favourable for the monsoon to advance into the remaining regions of Odisha over the next two to three days.
“The southwest monsoon set in over Odisha on June 12, initially covering some parts of Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj districts,” said Manorama Mohanty, the Director of the IMD’s Bhubaneswar centre.
On Saturday, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Gajapati might witnes rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty surface winds reaching up tp 50 to 60 kmph, she added.
Heavy downpours are anticipated to lash pockets of Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Gajapati on Saturday, prompting the IMD to issue an ‘orange warning’ (urging residents to be prepared for action) for these specific areas in its latest bulletin.
Forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and rain for Friday, the IMD issued a ‘yellow warning’ (be aware) for districts, including Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh.
Hot and humid conditions would prevail in several places of the state, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh on Saturday, it added.
