Deomali, one of Koraput’s famous travel destinations, continues to attract crowds of visitors from across Odisha and neighbouring regions due to its panoramic peaks and verdant landscape. However, rising safety concerns have prompted the Koraput district administration to plan stricter security protocols, official sources said on Sunday.
Renowned for its scenic mountain vistas and lush environment, Deomali remains an all-season destination. Demonstrating its expanding footprint on the regional tourism map, the hilltop recorded nearly six lakh tourist arrivals between 2023 and 2025.
Nevertheless, past reports of assaults on tourists have driven authorities to strengthen security arrangements ahead of the upcoming tourism season. One of the key measures will be restricting trekking at Deomali after 6.00 PM.
Under the proposed security arrangement, high-definition CCTV cameras will be set up, accompanied by police personnel stationed at key locations. Additionally, plans are underway to establish a dedicated police outpost at the existing forest beat house to enable rapid responses to security incidents.
Visitors will generally be permitted entry to the spot between 5:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with a mandate requiring all tourists to vacate the Deomali area entirely by 8:00 PM. Mobile police units will conduct regular patrols, while relevant line departments and security teams have been instructed to prioritize public safety.
