Heavy rainfall swept several parts of Odisha on Sunday, prompting the weather department to issue a red alert for three districts following the formation of a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal earlier in the morning.
The low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent West Bengal-north Odisha coasts on Sunday morning intensified into a well-marked system within a few hours, and is expected to move west-northwestward across north Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal, according to weather department officials.
Under the impact of the weather system, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Jajpur, and Balasore experienced heavy downpours on Saturday, with Rajghat in Balasore receiving 156.2 mm of rainfall and Kusumi in Mayurbhanj recording 133 mm.
The India Meteorological Department, in its bulletin, said that 12 other towns across the state also registered heavy rainfall.
The IMD has placed Balasore, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj districts under a ‘red alert’ for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall throughout Sunday.

An ‘orange alert’ – urging residents and local authorities to prepare for potential weather hazards – has been issued for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Sundergarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Anugul, and Dhenkanal.
The weather department further stated that heavy rain is expected to continue across Odisha for another two days, with fishermen being advised to avoid venturing into the sea till August 31.
