President appoints Justice BR Sarangi as acting Chief Justice of Orissa High Court

New Delhi- President Draupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi as the Acting Chief Justice (CJ) of Orissa High Court, Cuttack.

According to the notification issued by the Law Ministry, the senior-most Judge of the HC will “perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice with effect from October 4 consequent upon superannuation of Justice Subhasis Talapatra, Chief Justice of Orissa High Court.”

Justice Talapatra was sworn in as the 33rd Chief Justice on August 8 for a brief tenure of less than two months. He retires on October 3, 2023.

Justice Sarangi was born on July 20, 1962, at Pantikharisasan village, Odagaon, in Nayagarh district. He passed HSC examination and graduated in commerce from BJB College, Bhubaneswar. He studied law from MS Law College, Cuttack, under Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, and was awarded PhD in Law from Sambalpur University.

He joined the Bar in December 1985, having regular practice in Orissa High Court, Cuttack, and Supreme Court of India, New Delhi. He is also a life member of Orissa High Court Bar Association, Civil Court Bar Association, Criminal Court Bar Association and Central Tribunal Bar Association. He was appointed as Arbitrator, Advocate Commission and Amicus Curiae to assist the court in many important matters.
